The Business
Bills Auto Repair officially started, when my good friend Ken Crumley and I began fixing cars in an old barn on School Road in McKinleyville, California in 1973. At this time the only place to get a linebore or thrust cut on an engine case was at Bob Neely's small garage in Arcata.
Ken and I worked successfully at that shop for over a year, until the owner of the barn decided to tear it down. At that time i moved the shop to my home in Cooper Gulch. From 1984 to 1989 I took a rest from auto repair. In 1989 I reopened my shop in its present location, on the corner of 2nd & T St. in Eureka.
Over the years we have repaired and restored many older bugs and vans. We have built many hi-performance motors and even put V6 engines into cars. A sideline of mine is installing Ford V8's into different vehicles. My 1983 Ranger , our shop truck, was the proud recipient of a 302cid, auto tranny combination about 5 years ago. Changed its whole personality.

When the turbo diesel engine in my 84 Volvo 760gle toasted itself, I was so happy with the rest of the car, I decided, what else, Ford 5-litre power. I came up with a nice 225hp, heavy cam motor, and with the help of Converse Engineering in Portland, Maine installed the engine and auto trans. Most folk can't believe how a Volvo can get out of its own way this quickly.

THE INFAMOUS AIR COOLED ENGINES!

Over the years that we have been repairing and replacing engines in cars, we have had a lot of success with the quality products that have been purchased from GEX in Southern California. Check them out at: http://www.gex.com

One of my favorite endeavors at my shop is building hi-performance engines. I have installed a 2-litre 914 pancake motor into my 57 Astro Fun Buggy, then needing more power, I installed a 3-litre Ford Cobra V6 replacing the 2-litre air-cooled engine. It changed the whole personality of the dune buggy.   Too much horsepower, not enough cooling, back to the drawing board. If you want to ask me any questions, email me at: bill@bugdoc.com
